Description

Breathtaking and beautiful are two words that aptly describe this outstanding exhibition that defies his status as an emerging artist.

Drysdale is one of a new generation of Brisbane artists that revels in the quality of mark making.

CRITIQUE BY PHIL BROWN - ARTS WRITER, BRISBANE NEWS MAGAZINE

As humans we imagine ourselves as separate from the environment but the truth is that we are, intrinsically, part of the natural order. In this exhibition Kerry Drysdale seeks to reconcile us with creation through a visual narrative that celebrates the beauty and the numinous qualities of the places where earth, sky and water meet, places we go to reconnect and rejuvenate. The major theme of Ways of Seeing, a theme that literally runs through all the works, is water, which is essential for the life of the body and the spirit. The recent drought has highlighted how dependant we are on water and given us a new appreciation of its vital role in our daily lives.

But beyond the practical necessities, water is also a potent symbol of renewal, refreshment and spiritual revitalisation and its virtues are extolled by sages as well as scientists. In his paintings Kerry Drysdale gives us a fresh take on this most precious natural commodity – from beach to pristine mountain stream, from mangrove-fringed shore to lush rainforest, from estuary to suburban swimming pool. And in each painting he reaffirms the notion that water is central to life itself.
