Bush Symphony
(21st of November 2007 - 4th of December 2007)
Description
To those who are familiar with Collopy's work, you will find that her beautiful use of line and colour are still prominent. Her attention to detail and surface quality draws our attention to the landscape we walk over, and not always take time to appreciate.
Cate Collopy, presents “Bush Symphony” an exhibition of contemporary paintings fused with object, at RM Galleries in Hamilton.
This latest body of work introduces painting, textile and mixed media in stunning compositions and assemblage on canvas. “Bush Symphony” has been inspired by her move to the bush, at Blackhorse Creek in northern New South Wales 12 months ago. The exhibition is a reflection of the sounds, textures and visual delights that this beautiful place has offered.
“As I settled in to this retreat expecting peace, quiet and solitude, I saw that I had underestimated my place, it was alive with sound and colour, movement and texture that was so vivid and endearing that I was compelled to serve it up respectfully in this collection of abstract compositions.”
Threads, paint and objects evoke a sense of spirit and place as the artist’s narrative weaves in-between half-remembered stories and the strangely familiar.
A professional artist of 16 years, experienced in gallery, studio practice, teaching, facilitation and commissions for public and private artworks, the series “Bush Symphony” playfully combines media with the assemblage of found and bush materials on painted grounds with textile and weaving. “I am concerned with memory references often using the object as a tool to reflect or remember time and place. I see objects as a catalyst that presented in contemporary context, can provoke rich narrative, rouse memory and transport us to another place.
Cate is represented by RM Galleries in Brisbane and has works sold into numerous private collections in Australia, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom and United States and public art collections in Australia. Collopy cements her characteristic style in “Bush Symphony”, an exhibition which promises not to disappoint.
The exhibition opening is on Friday 23 November, 5 – 8pm, however, the work is available at the gallery for preview from Wednesday 23 November, or can be viewed online at www.rmgalleries.com.au
