Description
Rhonda is a Brisbane based sculptor who choose to follow her passion for sculpting and left the corporate world. Each piece is a labour of love taking many hours working with the idea and letting the flow and feel of the clay shape the final outcome.
Her works are figurative and inspired by the variations in shape and movement of the human form. She works exclusively in bronze or glass.
Rhonda has a uniquely original style making her work quite distinctive even though the human body has long been an inspiration for artists in all cultures and times. Her work captures a frozen moment in time that can often appear to defy gravity as the sculpture seem poised on the brink of continuing their flow.
The sculptures appear often to have some of the ‘heroic’ qualities of ancient myths and legends but the names for her pieces, such as Kev and Narelle, are well grounded in iconic Aussie-ism.
In this exhibition, the series, Swanning Around, blends the wistfulness of enchanted swan maidens with Amazonian attitude defying any need of rescue. Another series, Tall Poppies, reflects the syndrome in our culture of championing and encouraging our heroes only to anticipate and then rejoice in their downfall.
Rhonda believes people should touch and caress her sculptures in order to feel the magic in each piece.
