3 Sides
(9th of August 2006 - 29th of August 2006)
Description
The sculptures are mostly timber with colour staining their surface enhancing the image but not interfering with the gloriously tactile feel of aged timber, most of the works come from reclaimed timber from the Brisbane area and the artist has incorporated this sense of history in many of the pieces, all the works carry the sense of a meticulous craftsmen in control of his medium.
The drawings, or more correctly works on paper are not quick preparatory sketches but are deeply worked refined images in pencil, charcoal and some pastel. The works contain a quiet surrealism that can be edged with an unspecified threat as in the “Warning” and “Lance” works. Each drawing shows a commitment to the material of a mature confident artist exploring a private vision in great depth.
The paintings continue this refinement of vision. You get the impression that each mark carries some import and weight, often floating across an imagined landscape. Although the paintings sit within a framework of the landscape tradition they echo more to the abstract convention of exploring the human condition.
“3 SIDES” gives us another view of this artist’s work and gives new insight into a private world lived away from the throb of humanity where life can be seen in fallen trees and distant landscapes.
